SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Some parts of western Massachusetts are now experiencing drought conditions as below-normal rainfall continues to impact the region this summer.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has classified parts of Franklin and northern Berkshire Counties in the moderate drought category. This comes after a summer marked by hot and dry conditions, with August seeing only about 1.5 inches of rain at Westover Air Reserve Base, significantly below the average of 4 inches.

"So far this month we've gotten about an inch and a half of rain at Westover Air Reserve Base, so we're well below average," said 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis. "The average rainfall for the month of August is 4 inches of rain, so we're in quite the deficit."
