MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — Today's technology gives smart phones the ability to let you know if a call you're receiving is a scam, making it easy to ignore. But what if the call appeared to be coming from Morton County Sheriff's Office?

Scam and spam calls are unfortunately nothing new in our society. But a new trend popping up across the country is called Caller ID Spoofing. According to the Federal Communications Commission, this happens when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity.

But they're taking the crime a step further.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier shared what's unfolding in their county, and even across the whole state.
