OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) -- Students at Mary Carrico Catholic School learned about what it takes to become a firefighter.

Daviess County Fire Department Investigator Keith Hurm showed students how to prepare for fire emergencies. Officials demonstrated how smoke detectors work in a household and explained how he's seen a lot of house fires start in the kitchen.

Students also acted out a scenario to get a better understanding of what firefighters do day to day.

"We were talking about fire prevention in the home and how to get out of the home in case of an emergency,” Hurm said. “We talked about smoke detectors and changing the batteries like when we change our clocks. Now the kiddos are walking around our apparatus and talking about the different jobs a firefighter would do."
