Right now, the only number that matters for the Sylvan Hills Bears is one.

The Bears took a one-point victory over the Maumelle Hornets on Thursday night in their season opener and added a one to the win column, ending a two-year winless skid for the program.

Coach Mark Kelley's Bears stopped Bubba Johnson on a two-point conversion with five seconds left to save a 55-54 victory over Maumelle. Sylvan Hills' last victory was the final game of 2022.

"I understand the frustrations they had and I get it," said Kelley, who was the offensive coordinator at Conway last season. "I really do. There is going to be a lot of emotion pour through them finally getting that win. I am just proud of those guys. It is just step one but I am proud of those guys.
