When it comes to theme parks, Edinburgh and the Lothians has never exactly been well-served. Sure, there's the much-maligned MandD's, outside Glasgow, but that's a drive of an hour-and-a-half away by car, and that's about it for all of Scotland.

The outlook is very different south of the border, where practically every region of England and Wales boasts at least one top-class theme park. If you live in Birmingham or Manchester, for example, you are spoiled for choice, with the likes of Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Flamingoland and Blackpool Pleasure Beach all within an hour's drive of your house.

But back in the 1990s, there were plans to build a state-of-the-art theme park right on Edinburgh's doorstep and it would surely have been a massive hit with families far and wide.
