ANDERSON, Calif. - For the first time ever this year, Historic Hawes Farms is cancelling its 'Sunflower Festival.'
In a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon, the farm announced that due to 95% of their plants not blooming, they were left with no choice but to cancel the 4th annual event. "We used to do Clearfield Variety, that was supposed to be real nice" Owner Greg Hawes explained, "But it just didn't come up very well."
Hawes says its likely that the seeds weren't stored properly, and therefore weren't effective once they were planted.
All in all, only one row of sunflowers bloomed on the farm: "It's supposed to be every 6 inches, and you'll see a seed every 20 to 25 feet that came up. So, that usually lends itself to a seed issue" Hawes told us.
