Like most gardens in the area, the Rodney Community Garden — the brainchild of Stephanie Skelding and other staff at the West Elgin Community Health Centre, supported by the Municipality of West Elgin and local groups — is enjoying a bumper crop. Tomatoes, beans and other vegetables are being harvested, following close on the heels of raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, kale and lettuce.
This week’s harvest included several meals’ worth of green beans, Roma, cherry and beefsteak tomatoes, a few beets and plenty of herbs: mint, parsley and basil. The garden features raised beds, tended by individuals and families, along with in-ground beds that are either shared by all or assigned to the family who planted them.
