Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen will appeal a federal court ruling requiring the state to redraw its Senate district map because the judge ruled the Montgomery portion of the map violates the Voting Rights Act.

Lawyers for Allen on Wednesday notified the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama of their plan to appeal.

Allen will also ask the court to put its judgment about the Voting Rights violation on hold until the U.S. Supreme Court rules in a Louisiana redistricting case, a decision that could have an impact on cases in Alabama and other states.

The Louisiana case is scheduled for argument before the justices on Oct. 15.
