Harrietstown, N.Y. – An autopsy has confirmed that a Central New York native who was on multiple U.S. national bobsled teams drowned in an Adirondack lake last week, state police say.

John D. Cogar, 76, who was originally from Auburn, jumped off a pontoon boat in Lower Saranac Lake at about 6 p.m. on Aug. 21 and didn’t resurface, according to State Police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

DEC police and forest rangers along with a State Police dive team searched the waters through the evening and following days, the DEC said.

On Sunday, Cogar was found underwater approximately 200 yards from the site of the 911 call reporting his disappearance, said Trooper Brandi Ashley, spokesperson for the State Police.
