WASHINGTON — The Arlington School Board filed a civil action complaint Friday, claiming that the U.S. Department of Education has cost Arlington Public Schools $23 million in federal funding after trying to regulate which restrooms and locker rooms transgender students were allowed to use.

Fairfax County School Board followed suit on Friday, piling on an injunction and restraining order against the department and Education Secretary Linda McMahon, a President Donald Trump cabinet official.

Labeled as "high risk" grantees by McMahon, Arlington Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools were among a group of five Northern Virginia public schools who refused to abide by the department's prescribed policies toward transgender students and the use of school locker rooms and bathrooms.
