MINNEAPOLIS — Democratic lawmakers have already begun pitching legislation and Gov. Tim Walz is considering calling a special session in response to the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Aug. 27, that killed two children and injured 18.

Gun control legislation did not pass in the 2025 session — a tied House required all bills to have bipartisan support — but Democrats have said in the days following the shooting that the 2026 session will be different for gun reform.

Change could come earlier than the 2026 session slated to begin Feb. 17. A senior administration official said Friday that Walz is making calls to legislators and is planning for a potential special session in September focused on addressing guns.
