Anchorage firefighters will be out at intersections across the city on Friday, raising money for a longtime cause.

The annual “Fill the Boot” campaign supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Now in its 71st year, the effort has raised more than $700 million nationwide.

Jenny McGahan with the MDA says Anchorage firefighters are among the top fundraisers not just in Alaska, but across the four-state region, including Montana, Idaho, and Washington.

"The Anchorage Fire Department and the Anchorage Local 1264 Firefighters are top fundraisers, not only in Alaska, but in the four-state area that we cover: Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Alaska."

The funds collected go toward research, a specialized care network, and community programs to support people living with muscular dystrophy.
