Fire crews in Tok worked through the night after multiple human-caused fires were reported along a two-mile stretch of the Alaska Highway.

It all started around 5:30 Thursday evening, when smoke was reported about six miles west of Tok. Responders, including Tok Forestry engines, the volunteer fire department, a forestry helicopter, and Alaska State Troopers, discovered five separate fires, all within a two-mile area.

The fires, burning in black spruce and tundra, were not immediately threatening homes, but were in a full suppression zone near residential areas. Crews worked late into the night and successfully contained all five fires.

Friday morning, another small fire was reported nearby and quickly controlled. All six fires have remained under 0.10 acres each.
