LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans did not end when the flood waters retreated.
Louisville Archbishop Shelton Fabre was working in Baton Rouge when Katrina happened.
He was then appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans a year and a half later.
It became his job to help rebuild the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and he said it started with listening to the people affected.
“To listen to their stories, to listen to their heartaches, to assure them that you’re not alone,” Fabre said. “Because when there’s a challenge, or when there’s a disaster, the first temptation that comes at us is that you’re by yourself in this. Which is not true.”
Part of the rebuilding task was also managing waves of volunteers.
