MANISTEE – Both teams came into Thursday’s game undefeated, with only a season opening 1-1 tie with Leland marring North Muskegon’s record.

Obviously, one team was going to come away with either its first loss or a tie.

In the end, it was the Manistee Mariners who suffered their first loss after a pair of wins to start the season, as the Norsemen pulled away in the second half for a 5-0 shutout in the West Michigan Conference.

“We planned for them (the Norsemen) to be the stronger of the two, and we planned to hold them off and keep them out in front of us,” Mariners head coach Brandon Prince said. “But, they’re talent and ability showed through at the end.
