Three Vancouver Island communities held rallies on Friday to mark a sombre anniversary ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day on Sunday.
A small group of people led by Moms Stop The Harm marches in front of Nanaimo’s only Overdose Prevention Site.
One mom who lost her son to toxic drugs is among those advocating for safe supply.
“Safe supply saves lives. It would’ve saved Evan’s life. He would’ve lived another day. He was supposed to come to our house the next day, and we could’ve carried on from there. I wouldn’t be here today if there had been some safe supply,” said Sue Fichtler, Evan Cue’s mother.
