FRESNO, California — A federal grand jury has indicted 45-year-old James Key III, of Eustis, Florida, on charges of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced. The indictment alleges that between December 16, 2024, and August 17, 2025, Key conspired with inmates from the Federal Bureau of Prisons to smuggle fentanyl and contraband cellphones into facilities in Atwater, California, Florida, and South Carolina.
According to court documents, Key and his accomplices applied fentanyl onto paper, bundled it, wrapped it in synthetic grass, and delivered it by drone into the prisons. This case is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Spiva
