For decades, Stan Lee went out of his way to make sure fans knew he didn't order Marvel's most gutwrenching death, Gwen Stacy's murder in 1973's The Amazing Spider-Man #121. To this day, the original Gwen's demise remains a source of controversy among Marvel readers, and at various times, Lee felt the need to absolve himself of responsibility.
In 2011, comic book magazine Alter Ego published an extensive interview with Stan Lee, during which he distanced himself from the decision to kill off Gwen.
