Free Press sports writer Tony Garcia grades the performance of freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood in his collegiate debut for Michigan football in the Wolverines ' 34-17 win over New Mexico at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Aug. 30, in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season .

Underwood went 21-for-31 for 251 yards passing with one touchdown and no turnovers. He did not run, but was charged with two carries for a loss of 5 yards on a pair of sacks. The highlight was a third-and-14 pass late in the first half, with Underwood ripping a skinny post to Channing Goodwin for a gain of 39. That sparked a 2-minute drive capped by his first career touchdown: a 15-yard floater to tight end Marlin Klein.
