LOGAN, UTAH — UTEP's 28-16 loss to Utah State in the season opener told a familiar tale for the Miners.
Adversity in the form of a blown call went against them, then they didn't respond in a timely fashion and a game they looked like they could compete in got away from them.
UTEP was up 7-3 late in the first quarter, the defense recovered from a slow start for a brief stretch of domination and the offense sorted itself out on a touchdown drive where quarterback Malachi Nelson looked like a former five-star.
Then Utah State was awarded a 58-yard touchdown run on a play where running back Miles Davis clearly stepped out of bounds after about 20 yards. The Aggies took advantage, UTEP went into a tailspin and Utah State was the better team the rest of the game.
