The Red Sox are probably just fine with where they are today. They’re in the thick of a playoff race with a legitimate shot to win the AL East, they have a 21-year-old franchise outfielder and a 26-year-old Cy Young Award contender locked up to long-term deals, and they’re well positioned to contend for many years to come.
But getting to this point has been a long and painful process, one that could have gone a bit more smoothly had the Red Sox taken a different path four years ago.
