ON THIS DAY IN 1912 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “The football rules for the season of 1912 include two very important changes. One of these, relating to the infield itself, is extremely radical, in that for the first time since the introduction of the game into this country there is an alteration in the dimensions of the playing surface, or gridiron, as it has been called. Since the introduction in 1876, the field has been 330 feet in length, 160 feet in width, but for the season of 1912 the entire field is to be 360 feet in length, but the playing surface, that is, the field, which is usually known as the field of play, will be only 300 feet in length.
