Cynthia Nelson is swimming in color.

The shelves of her new quilt store Frozen Fabrics are lined with vibrant rainbows of fabric, vivid quilts hang from the walls.

The storefront at 409 College Road opened Aug. 6, but online orders have been up and running since May. Currently, she offers more than 300 styles of fabric, but is working to get that number into the thousands.

As she gets the business up and running, a new set of fabric bolts arrives each week, building her inventory.

“My main goal is to be able to provide the basics because you can’t get those anymore since Joann’s isn’t open,” she said.

Joann’s Fairbanks store shuttered in early May after the company announced its foreclosure and nation-wide store closures last winter.
