HOOVER, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A Hoover-based national organization is calling for more grants to help provide school resource officers (SRO) in all schools, including private and charter schools.
This message follows a mass shooting at a private Catholic school in Minneapolis left two children dead and 17 others hurt, 14 of whom are also kids.
Though it’s unclear if Annunciation Catholic School had an SRO, private schools across the country usually lack them.
Just this year, a new Alabama law went into effect which allows private and charter schools to partner with local governments to hire SROs.
Previously, they had no way to directly contract with local law enforcement. Instead, the schools had to hire off-duty officers which lacked consistency.
