BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - As Hurricane Katrina survivors reflect 20 years later, safety advocates want your help preparing for the next storm.

No one ever wants to go through something like it. It can turn your world upside down and storm survivors can feel lost, but Red Cross shelter volunteers step up to provide relief.

The Red Cross of Alabama says it needs 50 volunteers from the mid-Alabama area. This includes 10 teams of five.

They are accepting church groups, families, or individuals.

Shelter volunteers assist after hurricanes, tornadoes and even flooding events to set up beds and offer food to victims.

Annette Rowland with the Red Cross says these shelters are like mini communities, and volunteers are even needed for emotional support.
