MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - This Labor Day, shoppers in Alabama are getting more than just a day off—they’re seeing savings at the register. Two major tax changes officially take effect Sept. 1, bringing relief to families across the state.

Grocery Tax Drops Again

For the second year in a row, Alabama has reduced the state sales tax on groceries. The rate has now dropped from 3% to 2%, following last year’s cut from 4% to 3%.

It’s a change lawmakers have debated for decades. Supporters argue that the grocery tax hits low-income families the hardest, since they spend a greater portion of their income on food.
