Crest fought off a challenge fitting of rival Shelby on Friday, Aug. 29, holding on for a 31-24 victory after being tied with less than 6 minutes left in the game.
Shelby got the ball back after a 27-yard field goal put Crest up 24-21 with 2:17 remaining but Duke commit Lyrik Pettis picked off a pass and ran it back inside the 5-yard line to set up Malachi Gamble’s winning touchdown plunge.
"It was a good game, Shelby definitely played well," said Crest football coach Greg Lloyd. "We played OK, but had a lot of untimely penalties. But I'm not going to apologize for winning at Shelby; it's a tough place to play and I'm thankful we came out of it with a win."
The win gives Crest its fourth straight victory in the rivalry series between teams that own a combined 25 state championships. Mea
