STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Monday is Labor Day, a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September each year to honor the social and economic contributions of American workers.
It also marks the unofficial end of summer, and while many retail stores have sales and remain open, banks and post offices generally close.
Here’s a look at how the holiday affects beaches, pools, sanitation, transportation and other services.

New York City beaches are open through Sept. 7.
During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections, which are marked with signs and/or red flags.
