This Day in History: September 1

(WKYT) - In the lead-up to America turning 250 years old, we are looking back at every day in ‘This Day In History.’

On this day in 1985, the wreck of the famous Titanic was discovered.

It was found more than 12,000 feet beneath the surface in the northern parts of the Atlantic Ocean.

The discovery of the Titanic was made possible by the novel use of real-time imaging, debris field analysis, and deep-sea vehicles — strategies that remain fundamental in modern exploration.

An international team, led by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the French Oceanographic Institution, discovered the wreckage.
