MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) — As many Wisconsin students return to school this week, doctors are warning that heavy backpacks could be causing strain especially for younger children.

Each year, it’s common to see elementary school students carrying backpacks that seem larger than their own bodies. But health experts say those oversized bags can cause serious strain on kids’ developing backs and posture.

Dr. Lindsey Boyke-Lohmann with UW Health Kids says it’s critical to ensure backpacks are properly fitted and not overloaded. She recommends that a child’s backpack weigh no more than 15% of their total body weight. She gave advice on what to look for while shopping for a backpack.

“A well-fitted backpack sits right above the waistline and has two thick shoulder straps,” Boyke-Lohmann said. “
