The ACT government is under pressure to scrap a tax increase that insurers say unfairly targets Canberrans with health cover.

A 10 per cent increase to the tax on private health insurers will lead to Canberrans on single plans paying an extra $16.38 a year in premiums.

Families will be charged an additional $32.76.

Private Healthcare Australia is launching a social media campaign against the increase, concerned that other states and territories will implement similar taxes.

The campaign links the insurance tax with a $100 hospital levy , a tax imposed on ACT ratepayers, which the government says will help fund public hospitals.

The ACT government taxes private health insurers that operate in the territory, and those insurers pass the tax onto their members.
