NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - A Newberry County deputy was potentially exposed to a rabid coyote over the weekend while attempting to aid in removing it from the area.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy was exposed while trying to remove the coyote from the Beth Eden area after a resident had shot the animal. The coyote had reportedly been displaying unusual behavior near the citizen’s home.

The sheriff’s office also said the resident previously had issues getting help from agencies responsible for rabid animals, which is why law enforcement was called.

Officials said that due to the Labor Day holiday, the sheriff’s office noted the process of finding out if the deputy requires further treatment has been delayed until Tuesday.
