GEORGIA, Vt. (WCAX) - The Powerball jackpot has surpassed $1 billion for the first time this year.

It’s estimated that the jackpot will reach $1.1 billion for Monday night’s drawing. That would be the fifth-largest prize ever.

The lump sum payment is estimated to be nearly $500 million.

However, the chances of winning the jackpot are pretty slim, just 1 in 292 million.

Those long odds did not stop people from snapping up tickets at the Georgia Market.

Owner Zev Werts said the store has been busy with people getting tickets ahead of the drawing, and the chance of winning a $1 billion jackpot is bringing in business.

“Without a doubt, you get a big Powerball, you get something over a billion-- and you maybe see some faces that you wouldn’t necessarily see every day,” Werts said.
