BELFAST, Maine — A lobster named Passy Pete made his annual Labor Day return to predict the weather in Belfast, drawing dozens of spectators to the Penobscot Bay.
For the 11th year, the so-called clairvoyant crustacean chose between two scrolls presented by the Belfast Barons, a group of small-business owners who started the tradition. This year, Pete picked the scroll declaring six more weeks of summer.
"Pete is thrilled to tell us we'll get six more weeks of summer,” Baron David Crabiel announced to cheers.
Visitors came from as far away as Maryland and Texas to see the tradition. "I'm addicted!” said Texas resident Betty Byerly.
Attendees welcomed the prediction. “We would love more summer,” said Theresa Cumby, who added she plans to return next year.
