The Athletics’ X/Twitter admin team and pitcher Sean Newcomb had social media convinced that he was wearing a controversial NFL jersey ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Texas Rangers.

With the 2025 NFL season kicking off this week, Sean Newcomb and multiple Athletics players wore jerseys of their favorite football teams and players on Sunday.

Some of the jerseys worn by A’s players included those of Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles), Christian McCaffrey (San Francisco 49ers), Ja’Marr Chase (Cincinnati Bengals), and Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills).

The Athletics, however, inadvertently raised eyebrows when they shared a photo of Sean Newcomb wearing a vintage New England Patriots jersey with the No. 81.
