Memphis, Tenn. - Saturday morning, people who live in the New Chicago neighborhood in North Memphis gathered at the Dave Wells Community Center. Neighbors continue to speak against a proposal to build a new Shelby County Justice Center in the historic Memphis neighborhood.
“It’s totally wrong," Joseph Sawyer told FOX13.
Sawyer spent the first part of his life living in New Chicago with his family.
“We had a big family, a family of 11," said Sawyer. “From the time I was born until 68, we lived in New Chicago.”
The proposal would put the justice center on the site of the old Firestone Tire and Rubber Plant. It's a plot of land that's been vacant for decades. Norman Redwing, African Village Director, told FOX13 he doesn't believe the justice center would add any value to the neighborhood.
