MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Dane County’s annual Smart Trips Challenge is back this September, encouraging residents to swap drive-alone commutes for greener, healthier ways to get around.

The month-long event invites participants to bike, bus, walk, roll, or carpool instead of driving alone, then log their trips online. Those who do are entered to win weekly prizes and a grand prize drawing.

“We’re really just asking residents across Dane County to swap trips they typically make by driving alone with more sustainable, more affordable options,” said Kayla Haas, with the Greater Madison Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The challenge has grown steadily over the years, with hundreds of residents now taking part. Haas said the community impact adds up.
