His appointment came at an inflexion time for higher education, during an industry-wide questioning of the value of a college degree as costs and student debt soar, new graduates face hiring dips as AI takes over some entry level roles, and funding cuts from the federal government threaten research in the sciences and humanities.

NorthJersey.com sat down for a Q&A with Tate to understand the individual behind the administrator. He discussed his early life, his research and how that has informed his trajectory and approach as educator and leader up to this most recent move, from his position as Louisiana State University's top administrator to taking the helm at Rutgers.
