The Northern Lights dazzled across parts of the UK overnight and may appear again on Tuesday (September 2) following a powerful solar storm.

The lights, also known as the aurora borealis, were caused by a fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) that left the Sun late on Saturday and hit Earth last night.

The Met Office forecast on Monday (September 1) that aurora might be visible further south than usual , potentially reaching as far south as East Anglia, the Midlands, Wales.

Sky watchers lucky enough to have clear skies last night reported sightings of the colourful displays in north-east Scotland, northern England and the Midlands . The Met Office said on X that there were reports of sightings as far south as Dorset. Content cannot be displayed without consent
