CHARDON, Ohio — Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fatal crash in Newbury that killed a man on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened on Sept. 1 around 1:56 p.m. at the intersection of Elm Road and State Route 87, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 2018 Ford Escape was stopped at the stop sign on Elm Road before pulling onto State Route 87 and striking a 2007 Honda Helix motor scooter traveling westbound. The impact ejected the rider.

The scooter’s driver, 69-year-old Paul Buttari Sr. of Newbury, was taken by Newbury Township EMS to UH Geauga and later flown to UH Cleveland, where he died from his injuries.

Troopers said he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the SUV was not injured. Troopers confirmed alcohol
