The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has identified a 20-year-old swimmer who drowned off of Bean Point Beach on Sunday.

A body later identified as that of Abhigyan Patel had been recovered from the water one mile west of Anna Maria Island by a Longboat Key Police Department boat crew on Sept. 1, according to a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.

He was last seen swimming with another man off Bean Point Beach shortly before 7 p.m. and was caught in a riptide on Aug. 31. The other man was rescued and brought to shore, but Patel was swept away.

His name wasn’t immediately released earlier out of respect for his family members who live overseas and his father, who was on an international flight on Sept. 1.
