The Terry Fox Run in Sylvan Lake will be held on Sept. 14.

The Sylvan Lake run was started by Scott McDermott in 2005.

"When my wife and I moved to Sylvan Lake in 2001, there was no Terry Fox Run here, so my wife and I drove to Red Deer to participate. In 2005, the town was growing, and I inquired about opening a run in Sylvan Lake," he said.

The first year Sylvan Lake had a Terry Fox Run, McDermott partnered with the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club to host the run in the parking lot of Ecole H.J. Cody High School.

"Attendance was small — maybe a dozen runners — but it was a start. Each year, the run grew, along with donations and the sense of community fun," McDermott said.

Since 2005, the Sylvan Lake Terry Fox Run has raised over $70,000 for cancer research.
