An inmate at the Lee County Detention Center was found dead over the weekend.
Sheriff Jay Jones tells Action 8 News that around 9:08 p.m. Sunday, corrections deputies found 47-year-old Aaron Dwight Johnson, of Opelika, lying on the floor of his cell.
Sheriff Jones said initial indications are that he may have suffered some type of medical issue. There were no signs of foul play observed at the time.
Johnson was in the jail for Failure to Appear on Possession of a Controlled Substance charge.
The Russell County Sheriff’s Office was called to conduct an independent investigation of the inmate’s death. Johnson has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for a postmortem examination and once completed, the investigation results will be submitted to the Lee County District
