Those who knew Vicky Hester describe her as a trailblazer, a protector and a mentor.
Hester became the owner of the popular lesbian bar Babe’s of Carytown around 35 years ago, according to her staff. They say that after a long life of standing up for the queer community, creating a safe space at her business, she passed away Tuesday morning at 71 years old following a long battle with cancer.
Chas Warren, 34, of Richmond, is the bar manager. He met Hester in 2016 at a Pride event. When introducing himself, he thanked her for the work that she did for queer people.
“Vicky is someone that was amazing,” Warren said. “Just amazing.”
Hester invited Warren to officially join the Babe’s team in 2021.
Warren says he’s heard so many stories from locals about their experiences
