From a planning perspective, a housing development proposed for the north end of Hagersville seems to check all the boxes.

Building 43 townhouses on four acres of vacant land off Main Street — better known as Highway 6 — would add much-needed housing within the urban boundary, municipal staff told Haldimand County councillors at a recent public meeting.

Future residents of Sunflower Lane would be within walking distance of retail stores, health-care facilities and a school, and the townhouses would be more affordable than the detached homes that predominate Haldimand’s real-estate market.

Residents in the area see it differently.

They say their streets are already clogged with transport trucks and tourists speeding down Highway 6 toward the Port Dover beach.
