Top Steelers draft pick Derrick Harmon will not play in Sunday’s season opener against the New York Jets as he continues to recover from a sprained knee that he suffered in the final preseason game.
Harmon, the No. 20 overall selection in this year’s draft, had earned a starting position coming out of training camp.
Coach Mike Tomlin would not say who would take Harmon’s place in the starting lineup. Rookie fifth-round pick Yahya Black is listed as Harmon’s backup on the team’s official depth chart, but Tomlin said he’ll use a “committee” approach to taking on Harmon’s workload.
Other candidates to start include veterans Isaiahh Loudermilk, Daniel Ekuale and Esezi Otomewo and second-year player Logan Lee.
“We generally play a lot of D-linemen, particularly early in the season,” Tomlin
