SAUNDERS COUNTY, Neb. —
Swollen streams and gravel roads turned into ponds — the unusual Labor Day scenes stretching across parts of Saunders County after a burst of late summer rains.
"I heard by Swedeburg there was 6 inches," Andy Nordstrom, the Saunders County highway superintendent, said. "Weston area, there was 6 inches. Around the Wahoo, I heard anywhere from 3 to 5 inches."
County crews had their hands full, surveying the washed-out roads and cornfields swamped with water.
"It's very unusual," Nordstrom said. "The ground's just saturated, and we just keep getting more of it. So great for the crops, bad for the roads."
A two-man team pulled onto County Road 18 near Wahoo to set up a barricade. Water covered part of the road, almost nipping at the railroad tracks nearby.
