(WTAJ) -- A limited quantity of frozen shrimp distributed by Southwind Foods, LLC of Carson, California, has been recalled.
The shrimp were recalled due to possible radionuclide (Cesium-137) contamination. Cs-137 is a man-made radioisotope of cesium, with traces widespread. It can be present in the environment at background levels, with higher levels being found in water or foods grown, raised and produced in areas with environmental contamination.
The primary health effect of concern is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body. The FDA noted that health effects usually only occur following longer-term, repeated low-dose exposure, such as through consumption of contaminated food or water.
The FDA is actively investigating reports of Cs-137
