The Food and Drug Administration has announced more recalls connected to a radioactive shrimp concern . The latest recalls involve shrimp sold at Kroger stores in 17 states and cocktail shrimp sold at Walmart stores in 27 states.
The recalls are connected to ongoing concern over shrimp that may have been "prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137)" according to the FDA. Cs-137 is a radioisotope of cesium that is man-made through nuclear reactions. Although trace amounts can be found in the environment, including soil, food, and air, the FDA monitors for the radioisotope. Any unexpected findings of the radioisotope may require further testing.
