Entrepreneurs and small business owners tend to be focused on the here and now when it comes to their businesses, says the head a Lambton County economic development agency.

“But what’s critically important is looking toward the future,” said Matthew Slotwinski, CEO with the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP).

“How can this business see sustainable growth so that it has stability for itself, for its ownership, for its workers? . . . (and) how does it have sustainability beyond the existing ownership group?” are important, often unexamined questions, he said.

Most businesses don’t have a plan for the future, including what may happen when owners step back and the business changes hands, he said.
